WEB 1.0 - WEB 2.0 - WEB 3.0. SECOND LIFE SERVICES
Hi! Today I'm going to speak about distinguishing characteristics of Web 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and the potential of Second Life services in language learning.
Web has influenced our lives in a great way. The introduction of web and its current form has seen various phases. Broadly, these phases have been categorized into three groups namely Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.
Web 1.0 Web 2.0 Web 3.0 signify major turning points in the evolution of the Internet. Understanding the similarities and differences between these technologies is like understanding our past, present, and future. As crucial as these terms are, they’re seldom fully described. You’ll soon see exactly why these developments are so significant and what they mean for the future.
Web 1.0 –
The era of Web 1.0 was roughly from 1991 to 2004. Web 1.0 refers to the first stage of the World Wide Web evolution. Earlier, there were only a few content creators in Web 1.0 with a huge majority of users who are consumers of content. Personal web pages were common. It was a one-way communication network.
Web 2.0 –
Then comes Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is also called the participative social web. It does not refer to a modification to any technical specification, but to modify the way Web pages are designed and used. Web 2.0 is an enhanced version of Web 1.0.
The web browser technologies are used in Web 2.0 development and it includes AJAX and JavaScript frameworks. Recently, AJAX and JavaScript frameworks have become a very popular means of creating web 2.0 sites.
Web 3.0 –
Web 3.0 is a term that is used to describe many evolutions of web usage and interaction among several paths. In this, data isn’t owned but instead shared but still be, where services show different views for the same web / the same data.
The Semantic Web (3.0) promises to establish “the world’s information” in a more reasonable way than Google can ever attain with its existing engine schema. This is particularly true from the perspective of machine conception as opposed to human understanding.
Key Difference:
Web 1.0 involved helping people find something better.
Web 2.0 involved helping people experience something better.
Web 3.0 will involve helping people create something better.
Second Life services in language teaching/learning
The use of virtual world has become increasingly popular compared to conventional methods. Second life is an example of a typical virtual phenomenon that has raised interest among educators around the world. Second life is fun to use and it is a new alternative to English language learning. Many educational institutions have turned to SL due to its immersive and interactive environment.
SL is a great alternative for learners who have a dearth of opportunities to use, hear, and practice English in real life. In addition, the contact with native speakers not only allows students to practice oral skills and improve their pronunciation but also provides some cultural awareness.
